Richard,

Thanks for your comment bro. I am not sure I know all the details of your particular experience as I worked with Junior High most of your time in the SSM.

However, I do have a couple clarifying questions, if you will. First, how are you defining "community"? What is Christian community in your understanding of Scripture? Second, even as a staff pastor at the church, I am only deeply connected to a handful of people whom I might expect to truly help in times of personal trouble. Is it realistic to expect from your peers - who were kids themselves - more than a couple or a few to have the spiritual insight to reach out in days of distress?

"My concern is that many of our students have not either experienced evil in a life altering way..." And that is true. As one who fell from the straight and narrow, it hurts me to see my former fellow students and students today not perceiving the world in a way that recognizes things easily missed. It is far easier for me to appreciate my relationship with Christ once I knew what it felt like not to have it. To quote a man who escaped communism testifying before some government body recently, "I’ve been through it. I’ve been there. You people don’t know what freedom is because you never lost it." Many of these students don't fully appreciate that walk because they have never fallen from it. Perhaps if they did every once and a while, it would open their eyes...

As a former student at Scofield who went through some troubled times, and I will just leave this nugget here. Some students may come just because their friends are there, but others may leave because they find out that those who they thought were their friends, just aren't. That was what happened in my case. When I had rough times, I was abandoned by all but one or two individuals in the church. It took several years to be able to return. When I did finally return, was I greeted with open arms? Nope. Instead, that "in" crowd that I had used to be a part of now excluded me. The most unlikely individual was the one who helped me up, and welcomed me back. Take this story for what it is worth; the church can be a good place for community, but at least in my case, there was little to no community there for me.

"…our quest for convenience…" That does sum up so much of our culture, but should it surprise us? Wasn't that what Eve was after—the convenience of a short cut to knowing more instead of walking with God day by day and learning from him that way? My prayer, in addition to God's mercy, is that God's Spirit, through his church would be so effective in changing lives, that abortion, whether legal or not, would be a rarity.

Yes, good to dialogue. We are doing well, enjoying NC greatly and still learning lots each week about pastoral ministry. Just when it seems I've got something figured out…

But we love the people we get to be with each week, and they are kind and gracious to us. Would not trade what we are doing or where we are.

Hope your family is doing well as well as the kids at Scofield. We miss it as do our kids. Thankfully they have made friends here who are encouraging.
